Common causes of NetSuite implementation delays

Most delays trace back to a handful of avoidable causes — here's what actually pushes go-live dates back, and how to catch them early.

Go-live checklist · Draft

A NetSuite implementation delay rarely comes from one dramatic failure. It's almost always a handful of small, avoidable gaps compounding over several weeks. Here are the ones that come up most often.

1. Requirements gathered too loosely

"Match our current process" isn't a requirement — it's a starting point for a conversation that needs to happen before configuration starts, not during UAT. Delays often trace back to a scope document that sounded complete but left key edge cases (multi-entity approval chains, unusual billing terms, a legacy report nobody mentioned) undiscovered until testing.

2. Data migration underestimated

Migrating "clean" data is rare. Most legacy systems have years of inconsistent customer records, duplicate vendors, and historical transactions that don't map cleanly to NetSuite's data model. Teams that treat migration as a final step — rather than something to start validating early — tend to discover the scale of the cleanup only once it's blocking go-live.

3. Testing treated as a formality

User acceptance testing that's scheduled for two days at the end of a project almost never surfaces the issues that matter. Real testing needs to run against actual transaction volume and real edge cases — a single test invoice doesn't tell you how the system behaves during a busy month-end.

4. No one owns decisions internally

Implementations stall when configuration questions sit unanswered because there's no single person empowered to make a call. A named internal owner — someone who can decide on a workflow question in a day rather than escalating it through three people — is one of the simplest ways to keep a project moving.

5. Training left until the last week

Teams that only see NetSuite for the first time during go-live week are far more likely to hit friction that gets mistaken for a system problem, when it's actually unfamiliarity. Training that starts earlier — even informally, on a sandbox — catches usability issues before they become go-live blockers.

None of these are unusual or hard to plan around — they just require treating scoping, migration, testing, and training as real work with real time allocated, rather than steps to move through quickly on the way to go-live.
